Hejduk Called Into Camp

Frankie Hejduk has been called into the USMNT camp following the news that Clint Dempsey will not be available for the October 10 qualifier against Honduras. Hejduk, who is a fan favorite for his tireless work rate and big heart, will provide depth at outside back, since Carlos Bocanegra will likely play centrally to fill the void left by Jay DeMerit.

Hejduk, as Nats fans will recall, has put in several notable performances during the Hex. In the opening match, Hejduk was a key cog in the defense and added a great deal of energy to the US in their win over Mexico. In El Salvador, Hejduk sparked the USMNT's comeback from a two goal deficit, securing a point for the Nats with an 88th minute header. Overall, the Crew defender has 84 caps under his belt and has scored 7 times in those appearances. He will add veteran leadership to the squad, and could potentially be brought on as fresh legs in the back if the US is looking to protect a lead late in the match.

Hejduk's addition to the roster does not rule Clint Dempsey out of the Costa Rica match, since Bob Bradley only called 22 to camp to begin with. Dempsey status still remains uncertain.
