Who Else Punched Their Tickets on Saturday
The US weren't the only ones to qualify for the World Cup on Saturday, as 7 other teams punched their tickets to South Africa. Let's take a look at who's in, who's out, and how it happened.
In Europe, Germany, Denmark, Italy, and Serbia all earned berths on Saturday. Germany clinched the top spot in Group 4 with a 1-0 win over Russia in Moscow. Miroslav Klose scored in the 35th minute, giving the Germans all 3 points from Luzhniki Stadium. Russia, second place in the group, will have to play to in the UEFA playoff round in November to see if they can advance to South Africa.
In Copenhagen, Denmark took on Sweden for the top spot in Group 1. The Danes secured a 1-0 victory on the strength of a Jakob Poulsen goal late in the second half. Poulsen hit a low skipping shot in the 79th minute that slipped by an outstretched Andreas Isaksson. The Danes will now return to the World Cup for the first time since 2002, when they advanced to the round of 16.
Italy, meanwhile, stole a point in Dublin, breaking the hearts of plenty of Irish fans who had their hearts set on a famous victory over the Azzurri. The Italians were able to secure a tie after giving up an 87th minute goal that gave the Irish a 2-1 lead. Alberto Gilardino stunned the Croke Park crowd with a 90th minute finish that gave Italy a share of the points and a spot in their 13th consecutive World Cup.
Elsewhere, Serbia clinched the top spot in their group with a comfortable victory over Romania. In South America, Chile clinched a top four finish in CONMEBOL qualifying with a 4-2 victory at Colombia. This will be the first World Cup for Chile since the '98 edition in France. Didier Drogba and Ivory Coast, meanwhile, will return to the World Cup for the second time in their history after first qualifying for the 2006 edition.
And last but not least, Mexico have earned their spot in South Africa following a 4-1 home victory over El Salvador. After a shaky start to qualification, Javier Aguirre was able to right the ship and guide El Tri back to the World Cup.
In total, 19 of 32 spots have been claimed. 4 more will join the party on Wednesday, as the final automatic berths in CONCACAF and CONMEBOL will be decided, as will two of UEFA's automatic bids. The marquee matchup will definitely be the clash between Uruguay and Argentina in Montevideo, with the winner moving on to South Africa.
