DeMerit Returns in Watford Victory
After being sidelined for a couple months because of a freak eye injury and the corrective surgery that followed, Jay DeMerit returned to the field today for Watford. The USMNT center back came on at halftime for the Hornets, playing the final 45 minutes in the team's 3-1 home victory over QPR. DeMerit did not have a great deal to do in the second half, but he did manage to make a few clearances, anchoring a Watford backline that kept the visitors scoreless in the second half. The win vaults Watford into sixth place in the Championship standings, giving them a one point edge over Middlesbrough and Swansea City for the final promotion playoff spot.
There's not too much else to say about today's appearance by DeMerit other than that USMNT fans should be confident that he will be healthy and match fit by the time South Africa rolls around, adding depth at center back. This is just another positive bit of news in a week that has featured a great draw, plenty of minutes for USMNT players in Europe, and promising injury prognoses. DeMerit will look to earn a start this Saturday when Watford play host to Derby County.
