A First Stab at the Preliminary 30

It was a rough day at the office so to speak for yours truly today, so I wasn’t able to dedicate nearly as much time to posting as I would have liked to.  Not wanting to leave my loyal readers hanging, here’s a little something to tide you over until tomorrow, where I should be able to provide you with a longer post or two.

Anyways, the latest edition of the American Soccer Show (give it a listen if you haven’t yet) and the ever-looming May 11 deadline to submit a preliminary 30 man roster for the 2010 World Cup got me to thinking about just what players should get the call from Bob Bradley.  I haven’t put too much thought into it at this point in time (which is probably for the best given that so many variables are still in play), so bear with me.  Nevertheless, my 30:

Goalkeepers (4): Tim Howard (Everton), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Troy Perkins (DC United)

Defenders (9): Jonathan Spector (West Ham), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Heath Pearce (FC Dallas), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Jay DeMerit (Watford), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Carlos Bocanegra (Stade Rennes), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew)

Midfielders (11): Alejandro Bedoya (Orebro), DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Stuart Holden (Bolton), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Michael Bradley (Borussia Monchengladbach), Benny Feilhaber (Aarhus), Jose Francisco Torres (Pachuca), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Ricardo Clark (Frankfurt), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake)

Forwards (6): Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Conor Casey (Colorado Rapids), Charlie Davies (Sochaux), Jozy Altidore (Hull City), Herculez Gomez (Puebla), Edson Buddle (LA Galaxy)

----

I’m not overly happy with it at this point, but it’s a start.  If Frank Simek were actually playing, I probably would have included him as a third RB option, but Marshall gets the nod instead.

Perkins is in despite his rough start to the MLS season by virtue of his solid Gold Cup performance last summer.  DaMarcus Beasley’s strong play against the Netherlands helps to cancel out his minimal minutes with Rangers of late, and both Herculez Gomez and Edson Buddle get in the picture thanks to their respective fine runs of form.  Meanwhile, Conor Casey gets a mention thanks to Brian Ching’s injury, while recently injured players Oguchi Onyewu, Charlie Davies, and Stuart Holden all get included as well.

Have at it; let me know if you agree, disagree, or just can’t wait until the final 23 is announced so people like me will stop doing these roster predictions ad nauseam.

I hope Beckersuck is not on the team.

Why four keepers? Wouldn't three do just fine and free up spot for somewhere where we are more in need?

If memory serves, Bruce Arena had 5 GKs in his 35 back in 2006.

I wonder if Bradley will actually bring in four keepers. Right now, the top three seem pretty set in stone. I'm not sure that Perkins would really enhance the camp at all.

I think that spot would be better used on a fringe mid or forward like Rogers or Sacha who could at least push others (if unlikely to challenge for a spot at this point).

Rogers killed his chances in Tampa, in my opinion. And Kljestan just doesn't do it for me...
