Charlie Davies Reaction

Well, the 30 man roster was announced, and there was one big name missing: Charlie Davies.

Now, before I delve into this, let me just preface it by saying that I have always been a Bob Bradley supporter; anyone who reads this site knows that.  But on this occasion, I'm really having a hard time backing his decisions, as some of the names on this roster in place of one Charlie Davies really have me scratching my head.

For starters, Robbie Findley got the call.  The same Robbie Findley that left Real Salt Lake's game last weekend with an injury and has struggled with knocks all season, failing to really produce.  The same Robbie Findley that wasn't very effective against Honduras or El Salvador, two "B" teams, let alone against a World Cup caliber squad like the Netherlands in March.  You mean to tell me that an 80% Charlie Davies can't add the same things that a dinged up Robbie Findley can?  What harm is there in getting an in-person look at Chuck to see what kind of progress he's making?  Why not use two weeks of camp, during which he could continue to make the stunning progress that he's already made over the last six months?

Bob Bradley stated that Davies was not yet "medically cleared" by Sochaux, but this really smacks of a cop-out or a severe degree of information asymmetry.  I don't see how a player could participate in full-contact training if he wasn't medically cleared, and Charlie seemed to be under the impression that he was cleared as well.  Bob also said he wanted Charlie to continue to rehab; wasn't Charlie done rehabbing weeks ago?  And what will staying at Sochaux give him that working out with the USMNT won't?  He'll get fitness work and training in at either place, and at Princeton there's at least the chance that he surprises us (it's not like he hasn't done that before...) and shows everyone that he's actually ready to at least fill a substitute role in South Africa.  I'll say it again: I really don't see what the downside would have been to putting Charlie on the 30 man roster.  I don't think leaving Robbie Findley at home in favor of bringing Chuck would have been an egregious offense, particularly after everything Charlie has done and everything that Robbie really hasn't done.  I just don't get it.  Someone please explain it.  Bringing Charlie to Princeton doesn't force into bringing him to South Africa, and it's really not denying a noticeably better option their spot in the mix.

And on top of all that, Bob Bradley said that Davies hadn't been granted a full release by Sochaux, but that flies in the face of FIFA rules.  Sochaux couldn't have had the final say on the matter; if he got called up, they would have to release him.

I'm sure some of you reading this are out there on your high horse, looking down your nose at my reaction to this, thinking to yourself that it shouldn't matter what Charlie has done, just what he can do in June.  Well, to all of you out there who scoff at angry fans like me, I challenge you: tell me why Robbie Findley is a better option than bringing in Charlie Davies to get a look.  Convince me that bringing in a dinged up forward that has looked out of his depth at the international level, hasn't shown much in the way of form in recent weeks, and will likely not be in the final roster anyways is a better option than bringing in a player who has proven himself to be a quality international player and has the potential to continue his incredible progress and be ready to make an impact by mid-June.  Convince me that there would be severe negative repercussions to bringing Davies to camp and getting an in-person look at exactly where he's at.  Convince me that conferring with Sochaux, a club that is clearly going to want to be conservative with what essentially amounts to there long-term asset, is enough to support a decision like this.  Tell me what the downside would be to bringing Charlie.

I don't want to hear the distraction angle; the questions will be there regardless.  Instead of asking about how Charlie's progressing in camp, the questions will become "Why did you leave him behind?  Why did you choose player X instead?  Player Y, what do you think about Charlie Davies being left off the squad?"  And that's not even getting into what will happen if the offense sputters in South Africa, when all the second-guessing will begin.  Why not give him one last look and see, really see, what he's capable of at this point and get an idea of what he'll be able to contribute should he come to the World Cup.  I'm not saying he deserved to go to the World Cup, but, to beat a dead horse, I don't see why you don't at least bring him in to get a look.

I also don't want to hear the no matches angle.  Bob Bradley said he was pleased with the progress that Oguchi Onyewu was making, yet it was Davies who returned to full training first.  I find it hard to believe that the two are at materially different stages of their returns.  Once again, maybe this is just a big case of asymmetrical information.  But if you're going to take the chance on Gooch, why not do the same with Charlie?

Obviously, Charlie Davies making the World Cup was always a long shot.  But was it so different for Findley?  Will the potential drop in team morale really be worth bringing someone into the fold who looks far from ready for the international stage even when healthy?  After all, this a team that has been built on chemistry and cohesion this cycle; it'd be a shame if that took a blow just before the big show.  I guess we'll find out in the coming months.

And to those out there who say that Charlie still has plenty of World Cups ahead of him and that he shouldn't be rushed into this one, I would say that that is far from guaranteed.  We all thought it was a lock that he'd be in South Africa not too long ago, and look how that turned out.  Anything can happen, from a tragic injury to a severe dip in form to a new crop of up-and-comers pushing him down the totem pole; we just don't know.  So while it's nice to reconcile this decision by saying that Charlie has plenty of World Cup opportunities ahead of him, we just don't know if he'll ever get this close again.

I know Bob Bradley is in the business of winning games, not doling out sympathy and charitable considerations.  But I can't help but think that the expected value that Charlie Davies could add to the team with the progress he'd make in the next couple of weeks would be greater than what Findley could provide.  And if you really want to maximize the ability at your disposal, you take that chance to see if Charlie can provide even a quarter of what we were accustomed to seeing in 2009.  It's not as if we'd be short on forward options should he come up short; there's five others in the roster, plus Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan.  I just don't see it, Bob.

When you consider that there are SEVEN wing midfielder options on the roster as well, including Robbie Rogers and Sacha Kljestan, two players who have shown little to merit any kind of confidence from USMNT fans or coaches in their recent appearances, it also seems a little off that Charlie didn't at least get the call to camp.  The only way that Robbie Rogers or Sacha Kljestan make it to South Africa is if there are injuries, and if that is the case, they wouldn't need to be on the 30-man roster anyways.  Why do both need to be included?  Why not bring Chuck instead?

You know, I'm sure that a lot of this is more ramble and less logic than I'd like; too much heart, and not enough brains.  But hell, that's what tomorrow's for; for now, I'm just really annoyed with what's transpired.  If you agree or disagree, feel free to let me know in the comments section.

i couldn't agree more. Robbie findley AND brian ching get call ups, yet connor casey doesn't? compare the three's stats, and casey is the best option, yet no call up.

Man, I feel you. I didn't realize that Finley has been dinged up lately. You honestly changed my mind on this one. I was ready to let this go, because I mentally was preparing myself for CD9 to get left off the list. But to add Kljestan and Johnson instead is mind-boggling. Bob's interview on ESPN added to my disbelief, stating "[Johnson's] scored some important goals for his team lately..." um, are you talking about the 3, count them, THREE, goals he's scored IN THE PAST TWO YEARS? CD9 almost scored more than that in the FIRST 10 GAMES FOR SCHOAUX! Thanks for showing me the light. I'm on to bitch on more soccer blogs now... cheers!

Mike: Casey is a blackhole of momentum. He's great in CONCACAF, but really, who's he going to beat for headers against Eng-guh-land? The guy is just too slow for this stage. I love him for helping us qualify, but seriously, who are we kidding by adding an overweight turtle on the front line?

Yunuen May 11, 2010 3:45 PM

You have to be delirious to compare Guch's injury to Davies and not realize how different they were. Guch's injury was far less severe and required a straight forward surgery. Davies injuries were many (broken bones in legs, arm, face) and spent many days in ICU. Guch's actually made AC Milan's list of 23 players available to play. Davie's team hasn't taken the same steps for him. Please, wake up and stop rambling. Huge difference.

Their is still the chance of him joing the team late u have up to day before the first game to make a roster change

USSD May 11, 2010 3:53 PM

Yunuen, I'm not comparing the injuries, I'm comparing the recoveries. Yes, Gooch's injury was far less severe, but it actually took him longer than Charlie to get back to full training. At this point, both are healthy. It's just a matter of fitness. Charlie is done with rehab, and he's doing full-contact training. The injuries are a moot point because, if reports are to be believed, both are indeed healthy. Bradley saying that Charlie is not medically cleared is a big 180 from what we've heard from Charlie himself and reports over the past couple of weeks.

And that isn't even a big point in my argument; the question still remains: what is the risk? The Ligue 1 season ends next week, so it's not as if he'll be missing a bunch of matches and team activity. If anything, he'd probably get more training in at Princeton than he would otherwise (my speculation, of course, but I would assume Sochaux players would get some kind of vacation once the season concludes).

Gol Post: i'm not saying conor casey is the best striker in the world, i'll i'm saying is that if you look purely at the stats, he beats out Findley and Ching, plus all three are MLSers so there is no debate about level of competition. Also if you look at injury history, Findley and Ching are oft injured. Casey has started every game so far for Colorado, because he is as you say a Turtle, he's durable. i would have loved to see charlie davies get a chance over any of the three, but if you go on Bradley's "stats" platform, then he dropped the ball. Ching has the worst stats of the three, and for some reason he still is considered a viable threat by USSF brass. his luster wore off long ago in my opinion. its time to move on to younger versions of him, like casey

sacha??? really? over taking a flyer on a guy like charlie is ridiculous. and to be honest i wasnt even aware that findley has been int he lineup recently for RSL.
what if charlie is done though? what if he will never be the same electric forward that we all know? what if his career is basically over?

Has anyone stopped to think that part reason for Charlie not making the team is because he is being disciplined for his breaking the team curfew? Bob Bradley may still be mad at him for that! And bob might be showing young, up coming soccer players how important following the rules are and that disciplinary actions are going to be enforced, no matter how good of a player you are.

Guys, I think we can criticize names on the squad yes, but as for Davies man I would LOVE to see him there, but I think the bigger picture lies with his club team. I think they are NOT willing to release him. A club team looks at there $20mil (for example) player risking his career for his country vs his team. They (club team management) HATE World Cups with a passion as they sit on pins and needles wondering if their investment will make it back to the club in one-piece. Just my two cents. But hey I picked Johnson and my wild card made it :).

agronsky May 11, 2010 4:45 PM

Real disappointed that Davies didn't make the 30. I believed the BS about him not being medically cleared to play for Sochaux- thanks for clearing that up. Do you think Bradley had scouts watching Sochaux practice that just weren't satisfied with what they saw? Seeing Bornstein's name makes me cringe.. Anonymous, there's no going back, if you're not on the 30, you're not playing in this WC.

Guymons - I think he's been punished enough

Pete May 11, 2010 5:14 PM

I guess I'll be the guy voicing the exact opposite feeling. I think everyone needs to remember that everything we've heard about Charlie's physical condition over the last few months has been from...Charlie.

I love the kid, and wanted nothing more than to see him on the preliminary roster today. But the Sochaux folks have long said he would not be ready. Bradley, two weeks ago, gave some pretty strong indications that he was not physically there, and that was after the USMNT physios went over to work him out. He's clearly not fit, and there was a lot of questionable "journalism" over the last eight weeks that let expectations get out of control.

All I'm saying is that I feel sad like everyone else, but if he's not fit, he's not fit. It's not a conspiracy, and Bradley hasn't lost his mind.

Anonymous,  May 11, 2010 5:56 PM

Unbelievable, people wasting time talking about Casey and Findley! Bradley just wanted easy cuts for June 1st rather than quality players like Davies or Adu. The USMT now doesnt have anyone who can effectively dribble at anyone! How can you play offensive soccer when you can't attack the defense with an attacking player like adu that can dribble AT a player????

Doug,  May 11, 2010 6:15 PM

My question to you Pete is why have Sochaux deemed him fit to participate in full training, but at the same time declare him not be medically cleared? And when it comes down to it, Sochaux cannot refuse to release a player. Just sounds odd to me.

Jankarlo,  May 11, 2010 7:12 PM

I entirely agree with this. I don't understand either. Why was Davies left out? I was so confident to read his name on the list. I was shocked to hear he wasn't!

This is ridiculous.

Pete May 11, 2010 8:07 PM

Doug,

Not sure what the policy is at Sochaux re: full training vs. fit. But from everything coming from them and Bradley, there clearly is a difference. To float an awful comparison, Owen Hargreaves has been "back to full training" for months, and still can't go.

My point is this--if there was any way humanly possible for Davies to play effectively, he would be in camp, no ifs, ands or buts. Clearly, he's not, so I don't understand why some folks seem to be outraged about his exclusion.

Anonymous,  May 12, 2010 12:53 AM

you are absolutely right... If davies couldnt show he would be useful in any way at camp there was no obligation to bringing him. And kljestan... come on- he has done nothing in his international career. No point in adding him. One player who may surprise us is edson buddle. he could be a great addition to the front line. Started off his season in great form. Good writing- i couldnt have said it better myself.

you said exactly what ive been trying to tell all these bob bradley D*** riders. i Love USA and i love our coach BUT WHEN THEY DO SOMETHING WRONG, WE HAVE TO FIGHT! FIGHT FOR WHAT WE BELIEVE IN! thats what america was built on, but its the first thing we forget. we would all rather lay down ours arms and get knocked out in the first round.( i pray that doesnt happen) (and ill try not to say i told you so) but I WILL BE CRYING AND I WILL BREAKING STUFF! thats what i think bob bradley doesnt understand. yes were americans but this is serious, this hurts my HEART USA IS MY HEART! the only american soccer organization i can be some what proud of and now! now that we have a young brand new new mindset, new attitude FLOWING team, he decides to not include our heart the teams wonder boy, the teams future the teams HOPE! thats whar he gave us HOPE and now... now were just left with doubts...

Anonymous,  May 12, 2010 1:41 PM

@Guymons I agree with you.. people are talking about it but I agree with SI,

"this must be said: the other choice to be considered here wasn't Bradley's. Davies made a choice last October when he busted curfew, when he slid inside into an automobile late at night with someone who should not have been on the road. He's paying a terribly high price for that choice, but it was his choice to make, after all."

Anonymous,  May 13, 2010 12:50 PM

The Davies situation is ridiculous! Why is it an American team doctor declare he is fit or not fit??!! How is it we are relying on a French Club team doctor to decide our WC fate???!!! How is it that Adu is not going over Rogers, Sasha, Bedoya...this does not make sense..bring EJ but not Adu...ok so the end result is that we dont have anyone who can dribble directly at anyone in an offensive way. PLEESE dont say Demps,Jozy or Donovan can do this because its obviously not their strengh!! And anybody is delusional to think Clark,Bradley or Edu can dribble or use ball handling abilities against England!! Nice going coach Bob.

Buddy Beers May 17, 2010 3:39 AM

I was under the impression that clubs didn't have to release their players for the world cup training camps/send-off series but did for the world cup. From what I read Sochaux wouldn't release Charlie only for the camp and that was a priority of Bradley's. Because if he can't get a first hand look at him in the camp then he's taking a massive risk putting him in the 23.
